The CureMount™ Advantage
The CryoJane coated-slide-adhesive was designed to have a cured
refractive index, which would closely match the refractive index
of dehydrated tissue (i.e., approximately 1.55). If one of our slides
is mounted with a mounting medium of refractive index of 1.55, all
unstained tissue elements and the cured adhesive itself will be
completely invisible, making the stained elements stand out in exquisite
detail.
A number of commercial mounting media, like "Permount",
have a dried refractive index of about 1.55 . However, when freshly
applied, the refractive index is much lower because of the solvent
(typically toluene or Xylene, which have refractive indices near
1.50and take up to 48 hours to dry).
We have designed CureMount™ to solve this problem. It is
a UV-curable polymer system of low viscosity, which cures to a refractive
index of approximately 1.55 in less than 20 seconds.
Aside from solving the "optical problem", CureMount™
provides the following additional
Advantages:
Until exposed to near-UV, the medium maintains its low viscosity
and does not dry in air. Therefore, the coverslip can be accurately,
leisurely and optimally positioned, and any excess medium can be
carefully wiped (or absorbed) away before placing the covered slide
under the curing lamp.
After less than 20 seconds under the curing lamp, the slide is
dry and ready for microscopy, fully and permanently refractive-index-matched.
Since the cured resin is solvent-soluble, after cure, any excess,
beyond (or on the top of the coverslip) that was not removed before
curing, can be immediately and easily removed with a solvent-wet
tissue, without risk of dislodging the coverslip.
All of these advantages apply, not only for coverslipping Instrumedics
adhesive-coated slides, but also for all routine pathology and cytology
slides.
